Things to do in the Winter

Winter is Summit County is alive with activities of all kinds - and it’s not just skiing! Here are some of our favorite things to do including, but not limited to sliding down the mountain!

 

ICE SKATING

 

Check out the two NHL-sized rinks at the Steven C. West Ice Arena in Breckenridge. The indoor rink is open year-round and boasts bleacher seating, locker rooms, skate rentals and a proshop. The outdoor rink is open mid-September through mid-April and has an indoor warming facility. The Ice Arena hosts many groups and activities, including daily public skating sessions, public hockey sessions, youth & adult hockey leagues and learn to skate classes.

SNOWSHOEING and CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

 

The options for backcountry skiing, snowboarding, hiking, snowshoeing and x-country skiing are endless. This is great way to see Colorado in the winter. As always, make sure you are prepared for being out in the high alpine environment and always make sure you do not enter avalanche prone areas without proper training and gear.

SLEDDING and TUBING

 

Bring your family and sleds over to Carter Park for some great sledding. Hike up a little and sled down at Breckenridge’s local sledding hill. Carter Park is open to the public with no hours or fees. It is located at the South end of High Street.

 

Cruise down a snow filled lane on an inflated inner tube. Then ride the rope tow back to the top and do it all over again! This is a lot of fun for the whole family!

DOG SLEDDING

 

Learn how to handle the sleds and run the incredible Siberian Huskies from your dog sledding guide. HISTORICAL TOURS and MUSEUMS

 

Take a guided walking tour of Breckenridge and learn the rich history of the old western mining town that grew into a year round destination. Stop by the town museums and information centers to see a glimpse of what life was like back in the mining days.  You can even venture into the Country Boy Mine, an authentic underground gold mine and take a guided tour to learn more about Colorado’s mining history. When your tour is completed your guide will teach you how to pan for gold, and you can take your riches home with you.

MOVIE THEATRES

 

Summit County offers two distinct movie theatre choices. Our state of the art theatre, with stadium style seating and newly released films is located in Dillon, directly above City Market. However, for a one of a kind experience you won't want to miss the Speakeasy Theatre in Breckenridge. Go back in time to the Speakeasy, where they show a mix of independent films and newly released movies, complete with red velvet seats. There is also an art gallery in the lobby showcasing local artist’s work.

The Mountain Top Children's Museum offers children an opportunity to think outside the box and use their imaginations.
